The Syria Urban Research Project (SUR Project), a group of Arab researchers working on questions of contentious politics and political violence in Syria and the Middle East from an interdisciplinary urban and local lens. 

The Project seeks to build on a burgeoning literature of urban politics of the Middle East by:

1. Pushing for a relational approach to local politics, in which the local is examined “in its own right, and not merely as subnational territorial units” (Clark et al 2022: 275).

2. Narrowing down on categories of political violence and contentious politics as opposed to typical macro-themes of urban politic

3. Centralizing dense networks, as a research subject and approach, and data collection in the process of examination.

The Project also seeks to direct the discussion on new possible research agendas through the following interdisciplinary themes: broadening the scope of analysis to include local politics in intermediary/peripheral towns or villages, rather than the mainstream focus on capital or main cities; exploring how ruling authorities and/or local communities leverage locations and urban/spatial elements in intermediary cities to advance their socio-economic and political interests; and enhancing cartographic and visualization practices of urban violence through dataset-based mapping and spatial analysis. 

The first endeavor to this end was a workshop coordinated with Al Sharq Strategic Research in September 2022; the second will be a dataset-oriented workshop in October 2023, organized in collaboration with the The Alliance of Civilizations Institute (MEDIT) at Ibn Haldun University (Istanbul) and the Beirut Urban Lab (BUL) at the American University of Beirut.

مشروع الدراسات الحضرية في سوريا (مشروع سور) يتكون من مجموعة من الباحثين العرب المشتغلين بإشكالات السياسة التنازعية والعنف السياسي في سوريا والشرق الأوسط، بنظرة عابرة للتخصصات، على المستوى المحلي والحضري.

يسعى المشروع، استنادا للأدبيات النامية حول
السياسة الحضرية في الشرق الأوسط إلى

١. دعم توجه قائم على العلاقات للسياسة المحلية، والتي يُدرس بها المحلي “بحد ذاته، وليس كمجرد وحدات مناطقية ما دون وطنية”.

٢. النزول إلى المستوى المحلي بتصنيفات العنف السياسي والسياسة التنازعية، بعكس التخصصات التقليدية التي تدرس السياسة الحضرية على المستوى الإجمالي.

٣. التركيز على الشبكات الكثيفة كموضوع بحث ونهج، وجمع البيانات أثناء عملية الدراسة.

يسعى المشروع كذلك لتوجيه النقاش نحو الأجندة البحثية الممكنة من خلال المواضيع البحثية التالية العابرة للتخصصات: توسيع مجال البحث لضم السياسة المحلية في البلدات أو القرى الوسيطة/ الهامشية، بدلا من التركيز المعتاد على العاصمة أو المدن الرئيسية؛ والنظر بكيفية استفادة السلطات الحاكمة و/أو المجتمعات المحلية من المواقع والعناصر الحضرية/ المكانية في المدن الوسيطة لدعم مصالحهم الاجتماعية-الاقتصادية والسياسية؛ وتطوير التطبيقات الكارتوغرافية [المختصة بعلم الخرائط] والبصرية للعنف السياسي من خلال التحليل المعتمد على قواعد البيانات والتحليل الخرائطي.

كانت أولى محاولات المشروع لتحقيق هذه الغايات ورشة تم تنسيقها مع الشرق للأبحاث الاستراتيجية في سبتمبر/ أيلول ٢٠٢٢، بينما ستكون الثانية ورشة عمل موجهة نحو بناء قواعد البيانات في أكتوبر/ تشرين الأول ٢٠٢٣، منظمة بالتعاون مع معهد تحالف الحضارات في جامعة ابن خلدون (إسطنبول) ومختبر المدن في الجامعة الأمريكية.
